A little over a week ago, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a "proper" dSLR camera. I have been simply using a Canon A65 Compact Camera. It's been great for carrying around places, and easily fits in my pocket without even noticing it, even survived a 70km/h car crash where it was flung around the cabin and ended up on the road - a little battered, but works perfectly still, it's a tough little thing!
The reason for my upgrade, is that having a proper SLR camera with interchangable lenses, filters, etc allows for a lot more than a regular "point and shoot". I still heavily believe that it's not just the equipment that makes a good photo, but the quality difference between a regular compact camera and an SLR is pretty big.
I ened up purchasing a Canon EOS 400D with the Twin Lens kit. It comes with a 17-55 Wide Angle lens and a 75-300 Zoom Lens. So far I've also purchased a tripod and remote shutter release for ensuring the camera stays still during long exposures.
After playing with it for a week or two, I couldnt be happier!
