mac users

I'd just like to say I have nothing against macs, and my next laptop will most likely be an apple, as it is a genuinely nice piece of hardware/software.

It does amaze me however, particularly with designers - that they absolutely refuse to even try and use a PC, even though the software works in exactly the same way and there aren't really any "compatibility" issues to speak of with file formats. Whereas PC users tend to be a little more open minded about swapping over and giving things a shot.

I think this might all stem back to ages ago (talking, many, many years) when you did have to be careful with file formats, and printers would only accept mac formatted files - so the design dept. of each business would use macs, and because of that schools started teaching design on macs, and then aspiring designers saw everyone using a mac and thought "hey if I want to be a good designer, I need a mac!".

Sort of reminds me of the "Monkey Experiment" - I've replaced some words to make it more pertinent:
P.S. this is all light hearted, don't take offence. ;)

"Start with a cage containing five mac users. Inside the cage, hang a Windows PC on a string and place a set of stairs under it. Before long, a mac user will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the Windows PC. As soon as he touches the stairs, all of the other mac users are sprayed with cold water. After a while, another mac user makes an attempt with the same result, and all the other mac users are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon the mac users will try to prevent it.

Now, put away the cold water. Remove one mac user from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new mac user sees the Windows PC and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all the other mac users attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs he will be attacked.

Next, remove another of the original five mac users and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm! Likewise, replace a third original mac user with a new one, then a fourth, then the fifth.

Every time the newest mac user takes to the stairs, he is attacked. Most of the mac users that are beating him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beating of the newest mac user. After replacing all the original mac users, none of the remaining mac users have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no mac user ever again approaches the stairs to try for the Windows PC.

Why not? Because as far as they know, that’s the way it’s always been done around there."

Haha, that is awesome.

I have nothing against Macs. I am seriously considering making my next laptop a Macbook Pro as well.

I've always hated the "you're not a designer if you don't use a Mac" attitude. Ugh...

I bought a macbook pro recently, and being a pc user for the entirety of my career, i have wondered where this machine has been all my life. Of course theres the problem with the intel apple predecessor (im refering to the shithouse powerpc chips), but to say the least osx is just a great O/S.

There are so many advantages

1.) Unix based OS, no stupid fucking registry

2.) See point one

3.) Thanks to point one application installation is painless, so is uninstallation for that matter, click and drag to trash can.

4.) Apache preinstalled

5.) JDK preinstalled

6.) Peripheral support is better than microsoft gives apple credit for, osx has discovered the true meaning of plug and play, no 'your hardware has not been installed - go fuck yourself'

7.) OSX in general is remarkably easy to use and is so easy on the eyes, it doesnt need a 64 bit edition and a monster machine to run it.

8.) Due to point one using SVN, ssh, sftp any sort of essential work environment tool is a snap.

9.) This point is largely why designers and design firms used macs to being with, apple color profile is more accurate, i know this doesnt raise much of an issue for web based design but for the odd print job...

10.) Everything you could possibly want in terms of hardware and features right out of the box, yes you might have to pay with several body parts but it seems so worth it.

and my personal favourite:

11.) NO STUPID MCAFFEE OR SIMILAR REQUIRED TO PISS YOU OFF AND FREEZE YOUR MACHINE WHILST YOU ARE TRYING TO SAVE etc.

I still use both pc and mac at work but lately the pc has been slowly collecting dust. But without trying to sound like a mac loving tosser, experiencing the new intel macs makes me think; why on earth WOULD you want use a pc....

Yeah no doubt about it, they are great machines.
Generally I develop with a development server, so having inbuilt stuff like that isn't a huge advantage - but could be a bonus for traveling, etc.

Anyway, I'm jealous! Hopefully next year I can pick myself up a macbook as well, the new app coda looks very sweet for web dev.
